Merdeka is more than a date on the calendar. It is an opportunity for young people to understand the history, values and shared responsibility behind the nation they are growing up in.
On 28 August 2026, Peninsula Private School celebrated Sambutan Kemerdekaan 2026 with students from both Primary and Secondary levels. The school-wide celebration encouraged students to explore Malaysia’s history and cultural heritage while reflecting on the values of patriotism, unity, cooperation and mutual respect. A total of 192 students took part in the celebration.
The morning began in the auditorium with the singing of Negaraku and the Selangor state anthem, followed by an opening address and student performances. Music and performance set a spirited tone for a day that combined celebration with meaningful opportunities to learn more about Malaysia’s journey and identity.
The celebration then continued with activities designed for different age groups.
Lower Secondary students explored one of Malaysia’s distinctive traditional art forms through batik painting, while Upper Secondary students worked in groups to create portraits of historical figures. The activities encouraged students to connect creativity with a deeper appreciation of the people, stories and traditions that form part of Malaysia’s heritage.
Our Primary students also experienced Merdeka through a range of hands-on activities. Primary 1 and 2 students took part in Anyaman Merdeka, while Primary 3 students collaborated on Merdeka monuments. Primary 4 to 6 students brought another familiar symbol of Malaysian heritage to life through an inter-class Wau Kemerdekaan competition.
What made the day especially meaningful was the opportunity for students to engage with the spirit of Merdeka in ways that went beyond the textbook. Through art, teamwork, performance and cultural traditions, they were encouraged to explore what independence means and why the values behind it remain relevant today.
The celebration also reflected an important part of its wider purpose: helping students appreciate the peace, harmony and progress enjoyed in Malaysia while recognising the importance of preserving them for future generations. It also encouraged active participation and strengthened the values of cooperation and mutual respect within a diverse school community.
From batik and wau to historical portraits and performances, Sambutan Kemerdekaan 2026 gave our students different ways to connect with Malaysia’s heritage and reflect on their place in its continuing story.
As the school community celebrated together, the day reminded us that the spirit of Merdeka continues through the values each generation carries forward: unity, respect, appreciation and a shared hope for Malaysia’s future.
