Teaching Respect, Focus, and Community One Cup at a Time

Secondary 1 to 3 students participated in a Mid-Autumn Festival activity that delved into the cultural significance of the traditional tea ceremony on 12 September 2024. The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated across various Asian cultures, symbolises unity and gratitude. Traditionally, it involves family gatherings, moon gazing, and sharing mooncakes, reflecting the festival’s emphasis on togetherness and appreciation.

The tea ceremony, an integral part of this festival, serves as a medium for community bonding and cultural expression. Students learned the meticulous steps involved in conducting a traditional tea ceremony, including tea selection, brewing, and serving techniques. This hands-on experience not only enhanced their practical skills but also provided insight into the ceremony’s role in fostering mindfulness and respect within the community.

Engaging in such cultural practices has been shown to improve concentration and emotional regulation among students. A study highlighted that participants in tea art classes reported better emotional management and increased communication with peers and family members.

By immersing students in these traditions, the school aims to instil a deep respect for cultural heritage and underscore the importance of preserving such practices in contemporary society. This approach aligns with the school’s commitment to holistic education, nurturing not only academic excellence but also cultural literacy and personal growth.

Parents can take pride in knowing that their children are receiving an education that values and integrates cultural traditions, preparing them to be well-rounded individuals in a globalised world. Such initiatives reflect the school’s dedication to fostering a learning environment that honours the past while equipping students with skills and perspectives for the future.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
